The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
