Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he admitted that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Surprising Presence

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
