The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
