The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
